State-owned Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) has decided to store fuel oil to ensure uninterrupted supply for the current irrigation season.
The BPC plans to store 17.5 lakh tonnes of fuel, of which 3.80 lakh tonnes will be needed for the northern region alone.
Thus to meet the huge demand the BPC has taken the decision to store 2.80 lakh tonnes of diesel every month.
Since the region consumes the maximum quantity of diesel during the irrigation season the Energy and Mineral Resources Division (EMRD) took the decision.
To ensure supply of fuel during the irrigation season a meeting was held at the Energy Division last week.
The BPC had estimated that 3.80 lakh tonnes of diesel will be required this season for the irrigation in the northern districts of the country.
The fuel will be stored at the Eastern Refinery Ltd (ERL) complex, the lone refinery of the country in Chittagong.
As per BPC, the storage capacity of ERL is 4.97 lakh tonnes of fuel oil. To ensure meeting the demand of the fuel BPC will store 1.20 lakh tonnes of diesel in the central refinery premises.
Primarily, 45,000 tonnes of diesel will be stored in Baghabari fuel oil distribution company storage situated in Pabna, said an EMRD official.
The Division instructed the BPC, Power Development Board (PDB), Rural Electrification Board (REB), Railway, Chittagong Port Authority to ensure fair price and timely transportation of the diesel oil.
A control room has also been set up at the BPC head office on December 15 to monitor uninterrupted supply of diesel for irrigation.
Besides, Padma, Mehgna and Jamuna, the local fuel oil distribution companies, will set up their own control rooms to take care of the supply of fuel to Barguna, Khulna, Dhaka, Sylhet and Barisal.
The control room will prepare a daily report of supply, storage and sales which will be put on display at the EMRD and the Prime Minister`s Office.
