Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority (BAERA) on Tuesday will issue a site license to Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project authority to instigate site preparation task before the main construction work.
The licence issuing ceremony for the project organised by BAERA will be held at a city hotel, Professor Naiyyum Choudhury, Chairman of BAERA told energynewsbd.com on Monday.
He informed that the license will be given for a period of one year starting from July 2016 to July 2017. Under that licence, the project authority will be able to conduct tests on soil stabilization, meteorology study, safety and security.
If the project authority fails to complete those works by August 2017, they will not be given the main construction licence to start the main construction work, BAERA chairman said.
The Rooppur project authority has already paid Tk 3 crore to get the licence, he added.
Science and Technology Minister Yeafesh Osman, Mashiur Rahman, Economic affairs adviser to the prime minister Sheikh Hasina, Md Abul Kalam Azad, principal secretary of prime minister office, Alexey Ferapontov, Deputy Chairman of Rostechnadzor, Nikolai Spasskiy, Deputy Director General for International Relations of Rosatom and Project director of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant Project Mohammad Shawkat Akbar will present during the occasion.
On December 25 last year, Bangladesh and Russia signed a general contract for the construction and commissioning of the project in Pabna at a cost of $12.65 billion.
Bangladesh expects to add 2,400 MW of electricity to the national grid by 2023 from the nuclear plant at Rooppur with Russia’s support.
State-owned Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission, under the Science and Technology Ministry, will implement the Rooppur project.
