World’s first III+ generation nuclear power unit connects to Russian national grid

Reference project of Rooppur nuclear power plant - Unit 6 of Novovoronezh NPP in Russia becomes the world’s first Generation III+ nuclear power unit to be successfully connected to grid.

Trial connection of the unit with the VVER 1200 reactor having a capacity of 1200 MW was made on August 5 in Moscow to release its first 240 MW of electricity to Russia’s national grid, said press release.

Specialists carried out a large number of checks and tests at different power build up stages as well as inspection of different equipment. The measures are necessary to confirm reliability and safety of the power unit during its further operation.

“This event is our great victory, which involved a huge amount of work in installation and adjustment of equipment and complex process operations. Everything was done reliably and safely.” said Andrey Petrov, General Director of Rosenergoatom.

President of NIAEP Valery Limarenko pointed out: “ROSATOM is the world’s largest supplier of nuclear power plants. Today, we have made our positions stronger. It opens new opportunities for further strengthening our presence in the global market.”

The innovative power units of Generation III+ possess improved performance parameters. They are absolutely safe in operation and fully meet the IAEA’s post-Fukushima requirements.

They feature a large number of passive safety systems, which are able to function even in case of an emergency without operator’s intervention. Unit 6 of Novovoronezh NPP has unique passive heat removal system from the reactor, hydrogen recombiners and core catcher.

At present, Generation III+ power units are being built in the USA and France. Unit 6 of Novovoronezh NPP, however, has become the first new generation nuclear power unit in the world to supply electricity to grid
